Lavandula 'Munstead': Cottage Calm and Herbal Grace

Low-growing and richly fragrant, Lavandula 'Munstead' is a time-honoured favourite known for its compact form, silvery foliage, and early summer bloom. Soft spikes of lavender-purple flowers emerge in abundance, filling the garden with scent and the gentle hum of pollinators. Easygoing and deeply charming, it’s the essence of an English cottage garden distilled into one sun-loving perennial.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Height: 30–45 cm
  • Spread: 40–50 cm, forming a dense, rounded clump
  • Flower Colour: Soft lavender-purple
  • Flowering Period: Early to midsummer, with possible rebloom
  • Foliage: Silvery-green, aromatic, evergreen in mild climates
  • Sunlight Requirements: Full sun
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils; prefers neutral to alkaline pH

Uses and Benefits: Lavandula 'Munstead' excels in sunny borders, herb gardens, and as a graceful low hedge along pathways. Its modest stature and generous bloom make it ideal for containers, raised beds, and front-of-border plantings. As a pollinator magnet and drought-tolerant staple, it adds both ecological and aesthetic value. With evergreen foliage and richly scented flowers, it lends year-round structure and a peaceful, herbal presence to every corner of the garden.

Companion Plants: Contrast the soft purples of Lavandula 'Munstead' with the warm golden foliage of Sedum 'Angelina', a succulent groundcover that thrives in similar conditions. Add a vertical note with Platycodon 'Astra S-D White', whose crisp white balloon flowers lift the planting and highlight the lavender’s hues. Complete the trio with Sporobolus heterolepsis, a fine-textured native grass that sways gently in the breeze and infuses the border with movement and grace.

Care Instructions: Provide full sun and sharply drained soil—avoid clay or poorly drained areas. Water deeply but infrequently once established. Deadhead to prolong flowering and prune back hard in early spring to encourage bushiness. Lavender dislikes excessive fertility or moisture, so lean soils and open sites are best. Replace older plants every 4–5 years for optimal shape and performance.

History: Lavandula 'Munstead' was selected in the early 20th century and popularized by renowned British gardener Gertrude Jekyll. Named after her home, Munstead Wood, this cultivar remains treasured for its compact size, early bloom, and consistent colour—one of the first lavenders to flower each season.

Final Thoughts: Aromatic and enduring, Lavandula 'Munstead' brings the romance of old-world herb gardens into today’s sustainable landscapes. Whether lining a stone path or tucked into a sunny pot, it fills each space with calm, resilience, and quiet bloom.

It is great to use if you are trying to understand the ...
Format: Hardcover
I am entering my second year of PA school and I use this book 2-3 times a week. Summary: This is clearly a book for practitioners ONLY (or soon to be). If you are a medical, PA, or NP student, consider delaying buying this book until your 2nd or 3rd year. This book can feel very overwhelming, especially since most of the time you have a quick question and it may take several minutes to find it. It is great to use if you are trying to understand the entire picture of a disease, especially in a clinical context. It starts by giving you 1-2 paragraphs of pathophysiology, then gives you the process of diagnosing, the clinical presentation, the ddx, labs, tx, prognosis, and "pearls" of the disease. I like using this when I am learning about a specific disease for the first time. Please understand, there is no one book that can answer every question of medicine. This however, is as close as you will get with the exception of a few things here and there. Overall, great book to supplement my classroom lectures.

nice sturdy frame
We had a piece of actual wood lane from a bowling alley that i wanted a table made out of. Which made it weigh about 400 pounds, guessing. Our biggest worry about this is the frame holding it up with grandkids around!!! And being able to move it to sit behind it or clean around it when needed. This was what we decided on. Tim said it was super easy to put it together. The height was just a tad taller than our chairs, but there are pieces that can be taken out to accommodate this. When i told my husband it had wheels on it and definitely would aid moving it around. He said oh yeah, that's going to work real well with the weight of this table. And trust me it was said very sarcastically. So, that these worked as well as they have, really impressed him. We have friends that we gave a piece of lane to so they could make a bar in their kitchen out of it. He bought some pipe in town and he paid a heck of a lot more money out than we wanted to put out. So, we were extremely happy to find this. It is sturdy, great value and we are all very happy with it and it looks great! I highly recommend it. I think no matter what you are going to use it for, it is going to fit into any decor.

Quite good!
Quite a solid set of legs. It little flimsier than I had hoped for but we are not moving the table we built around much. The wheels are also quite small. I would purchase again though!
